Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying population growth and food wastage as causes, and proposing food industry advancements and waste reduction as solutions. However, the ideas are relatively undeveloped and lack specific supporting examples, relying instead on broad generalisations. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met as the response contains only 229 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length impacts the overall development and completeness of the task. Consequently, the performance aligns best with a Band 5.0 descriptor, where the task is addressed only partially and ideas remain limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing the causes and solutions, and a brief conclusion. However, progression is somewhat disjointed due to abrupt transitions and mechanical use of cohesive devices, such as repeating 'Although' and 'The other main cause is'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the single large body paragraph makes the structure look clumsy and affects the overall logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'from which a large number of population is increasing rapidly'. These features place the response firmly in Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'poulation' instead of population, 'probleum', 'indutry', and 'reaced' instead of reached. The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'Modernisation' and 'preservation', but inaccurate word forms and collocations restrict the flexibility and precision of the writing. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, the lexical range is minimally adequate, fitting the Band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex sentences contain fundamental errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'Despite of improvement' (incorrect preposition), 'do not reach at the demands', and dangling punctuation errors like 'legislations. and they'. Subject-verb agreement issues are also present, for example, 'majority of world's population are suffering' and 'organisation are doing'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control of grammar, corresponding to a Band 5.0 score.
