In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry.

Why is this the case?

What can be done about this problem?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Although agricultural practices have been advanced, hunger remains the major issue, This issue is mainly because of inequality and changes in landuse.

Agricultural practices have been improved over many decades, Compared to past, lastest techniques have widely improved productivity. From better seed varieties to good agricultural practices such as better weather forcast to farming tools and techniques, technology has revolutionized the agricultural practices but many parts in the world is still suffering from hunger and prevailing problems such as malnutirition. The main drivers behind this problem is poor distribution of food resources among rich and poor. Surprisingly, the issues are more common in agricultural countries including Pakistan. For instance undeveloped countries have highest rates of hunger and related problems. The second factor that aggravate this problem is conversion of land especially agricultural land. To meet the needs of growing population, agricultural land is used to construct residential and commercial areas. This has largely a negative impact on food production. Consequently, food shortages occur as more useful land is changed into other purposes.

There are solution to combat these problems. Access to resources should be made to everyone irrespective of wealth. This will ensure the availibilty of good resources to the lowest strata. The second issue can be tackle by practices that will prevent the wastage of arable land. To avoid the conversion of agricultural land, development should be ensured in barren lands. Also, government should ensured that productive land shall not be degraded for developments. Additionally, preventive measures shall be ensured to agricultural land loss by adopting land management practices.

To sum up, While advancement in agiculture, hunger is one of the largest problem of humanity because of poor access of food supplies and conversion of agricultural land to meet the needs of growing population. Such issues can be managed through preventive measures by governments and individual cooperation.
