Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is very hard to believe that world hunger still remains one of the most significant problems despite technology getting considerably advanced in the field of agriculture. This essay would analyse the possible causes for this issue along with finding out a few practical and sustainable solutions.

To begin with, it can be evidently observed that a lot of people throughout the world have limited access to food because of their monetary limitations and overall economy of the region. Although such people dwelling in developed countries are usually able to arrange something to eat thanks to somewhat abundant resources, the picture gets drastically worse for the developing nations. It is more of a regional problem there with most of the people living well below the poverty line, along with scarcity of food and other resources adding up to that. On top of the financial constraints and scarcity of resources, another main reason for world hunger is the ever increasing population around the globe, which is somewhat the catalyst for the above limitations. Due to this meteoric rise in population, the governing bodies are failing to provide enough consumables despite having ultra modern agricultural facilities.

To identify the optimum solution to the issue, we have to target the major cause, which is undoubtedly the rapid growth of population. People around the world needs to be educated on birth control and family planning, and these should be encouraged by the national authorities by conducting physical campaigns and media advertisements. Coupled with that, it needs to be ensured that there are significant amount of jobs available, helping individuals to earn enough and comfortably afford the necessities including food. Finally, as human beings it should be our utmost duty not to waste food and other resources, and also to make sure it is distributed properly.

In conclusion, we can state that the poor economic condition of the people and the regional shortcomings powered by the ever increasing population of the world are some of the major reasons behind hunger. To sustainably fight with that, we need to actively educate people on population control and ensure the abundance of income sources along with reducing wastage as much as possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task fully. The candidate successfully explores the reasons behind continued world hunger, citing economic limitations, regional disparities, and population growth, and provides viable solutions such as education, job creation, and food waste reduction. The position is clear throughout the essay, and ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations, such as the contrast between developed and developing nations. The response meets all the requirements of an academic essay, providing a well-rounded and cohesive argument without any major omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to causes, solutions, and a final conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'On top of the financial constraints', and 'To identify the optimum solution', though occasionally transitions can feel slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader logically through the writer's arguments without causing confusion or misdirection.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate and precise enough to convey complex ideas, with appropriate academic and thematic lexis such as 'monetary limitations', 'poverty line', 'ultra modern agricultural facilities', and 'family planning'. The candidate attempts less common items like 'meteoric rise' and 'sustainable solutions'. While there are a few minor lexical choices that could be more refined—for instance, 'consumables' is used where 'food supplies' or 'provisions' might sound more natural—the range is sufficient for flexibility and precision, supporting clear communication throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas and subordinate clauses successfully (e.g., 'Although such people dwelling in developed countries are usually able to arrange something to eat...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few minor slip-ups, such as the subject-verb agreement error in 'People around the world needs to be educated'. Punctuation and sentence structures remain under control, and these occasional inaccuracies do not impede communication or strain the reader's comprehension.
