Student answer (Band 6.5)

Despite significant advances in agriculture, millions of people around the world still suffer from hunger. This situation may seem surprising, but it is mainly caused by poverty, unequal food distribution and conflicts. However, governments and international organisations can take several steps to reduce this problem.

One major reason for hunger is poverty. Although modern farming methods have increased food production, many people cannot afford to buy sufficient food. In developing countries, low-income families may spend most of their earnings on basic necessities and still struggle to obtain nutritious meals. Another important cause is the unequal distribution of food. Some countries produce more food than they need, while others face shortages because of poor transportation, storage facilities and infrastructure. In addition, wars and political instability can destroy farmland, prevent farmers from working and make it difficult to deliver food to affected communities.

There are several possible solutions to this problem. First, governments should invest in modern agricultural technology and provide farmers with better seeds, irrigation systems, machinery and training. This can help farmers increase production, particularly in areas affected by drought or poor soil. Second, countries should improve food storage and transportation systems to reduce the amount of food that is lost before reaching consumers. International organisations can also provide emergency food supplies and financial assistance to countries experiencing severe shortages.Furthermore, reducing poverty is essential for tackling hunger in the long term. Governments should create employment opportunities and improve access to education so that people can earn stable incomes and afford healthy food.

In conclusion, hunger continues to exist despite agricultural progress because food is not equally accessible or distributed, and poverty and conflict prevent many people from obtaining adequate nutrition. Improving farming systems, infrastructure and economic opportunities, together with international cooperation, can significantly reduce world hunger.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining why people still go hungry, identifying poverty, unequal food distribution, and conflicts as the main causes. The second part of the prompt is also thoroughly answered with relevant solutions, such as investing in agricultural technology, improving infrastructure, and reducing poverty. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the main ideas are well-developed and supported with logical explanations, such as mentioning how low-income families spend most of their earnings on basic necessities. The response meets all criteria for a Band 7.0, as all parts of the prompt are addressed and ideas are extended with clear reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct and well-managed focus: the introduction outlines the causes and solutions, the second paragraph details the causes of hunger, the third paragraph provides solutions, and the conclusion neatly summarises the main points. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, as seen in transition phrases like 'One major reason', 'Another important cause', 'First', and 'Second'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the response flows smoothly from one idea to the next. The management of cohesion and logical sequencing easily satisfies the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for flexibility and precision in discussing agricultural and socio-economic issues. Less common lexical items are used appropriately, such as 'nutritious meals', 'political instability', 'emergency food supplies', and 'economic opportunities'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, and spelling is correct throughout the essay. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated or rare enough to push into Band 8 territory, it easily meets the Band 7 descriptor for having a sufficient range with some awareness of style and collocation, and minor errors are absent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, demonstrating good overall control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex sentences include 'Although modern farming methods have increased food production, many people cannot afford to buy sufficient food' and 'Governments should create employment opportunities and improve access to education so that people can earn stable incomes'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. The occasional minor slips or limitations do not impede communication at all, placing this securely in the Band 7 category for grammatical range and accuracy.
