Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, modern methods of agriculture has become increasingly popular across the world. Some people argue despite all the advances made in agriculture, many people are still facing starvation. In this essay, I will explain the reasons for this problem and its solution.

There are several reasons for this problem including rapid population growth and increased life expectancy. Nowadays, people are living more due to advanced healthcare systems which directly affects natural resources scarcity. Population is increasing exponentially, declining resources including fertile soil fails to fulfill the needs of such a huge number of people. Resultantly, low-income families and under-developed countries are experiencing hunger strikes. Secondly, in this contemporary society, food wastage is one the main reasons. Financially affluent and middle-income people use to waste food in the events, weddings and on daily basis as well. Consequently, low-income families are left with limited food availabilty.

On the other hand, there are many solutions to tackle starvation. Governments can take numerous steps and enforce laws in equal distribution of resources among people. They can control food wastage by allocating particular quantity of food for the specific number of people. In this way, food will be prevented from wastage and will probably reach among disadvantaged areas. Secondly, they can prepare genetically modified seeds to enhance food production. This step can efficiently cope with the increasing demands of nutrition. For example, governments can produce different breeds of chickens that can grow fast, give more eggs with sufficient nutritional values.

All things considered, although modern agriculture practices are increasing food production, their poor handling might causes the reducing supply especially among deprived areas. Governenments' new policies for enhancing food production and regulated distribution combat starvation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons for continuing global hunger and proposing clear solutions. The student presents a distinct position throughout the essay. In the second paragraph, the ideas of population growth, resource scarcity, and food wastage are introduced and supported with explanations, such as mentioning how affluent people waste food at events. However, some arguments could be extended further; for example, the mention of hunger strikes is a slight misuse of vocabulary, as a strike is a protest rather than a state of starvation. Overall, the content is relevant, well-structured, and covers the requirements of the task effectively, aligning with the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction outlining the essay's structure, followed by body paragraphs dedicated separately to reasons and solutions, and finishes with a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions between ideas, such as 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently'. However, some referencing and cohesive links are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'For example, governments can produce different breeds of chickens that can grow fast, give more eggs with sufficient nutritional values.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, ensuring the reader can follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'exponentially', 'financially affluent', and 'genetically modified'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and odd collocations. For instance, the phrase 'hunger strikes' is used incorrectly to mean severe hunger or starvation, and 'limited food availabilty' contains a spelling error. Other minor slips include 'natural resources scarcity' instead of 'scarcity of natural resources'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly, preventing the score from falling below Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures such as 'In spite of the advances made in agriculture...' and 'Governments can take numerous steps...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text. For example, a subject-verb agreement error occurs in the opening sentence: 'modern methods of agriculture has become', where 'has' should be 'have'. Other errors include 'people are living more' instead of 'people are living longer', and 'might causes the reducing supply' which combines a modal verb incorrectly with a plural verb and a confusing noun phrase. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors prevent a higher band.
