Student answer (Band 6.5)
In response to the accelerating climate crisis, a growing segment of the population has chosen to curtail their air travel or eschew flying entirely. While this trend poses notable operational and personal challenges for commercial entities and individuals alike, I firmly believe that the profound environmental advantages far eclipse these transient drawbacks. To begin with, reducing aviation undoubtedly imposes a heavy toll on global commerce and personal connectivity. From a business perspective, multinational corporations rely heavily on international flights to conduct face-to-face negotiations, audit overseas facilities, and manage global supply chains efficiently. Virtual communication, though useful, often falls short of building the deep trust required for high-stakes enterprise. For individuals, air travel has democratized cross-border tourism and facilitated family reunification in an increasingly globalized world. Restricting this freedom could lead to a sharp decline in tourism-dependent economies and exacerbate a sense of isolation among diaspora communities who find themselves physically disconnected from loved ones.Nevertheless, the ecological imperatives of reducing air travel are monumental and cannot be ignored. The aviation sector is currently one of the fastest-growing contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides directly into the upper atmosphere, where their warming effect is amplified. By curbing or eliminating commercial flights, humanity can achieve an immediate and substantial reduction in its collective carbon footprint. Furthermore, this shift puts necessary pressure on both governments and transport networks to accelerate the development of greener infrastructure, such as high-speed electric rail networks. Ultimately, preserving atmospheric stability is an existential necessity that safeguards the very planet upon which these businesses and individuals operate. In conclusion, although a paradigm shift away from flying incurs undeniable economic friction for enterprises and alters the lifestyle of global citizens, the ecological dividend is vastly more critical. Since a destabilized climate poses a systemic threat to all human activity, the environmental benefits of reduced aviation indisputably outweigh the immediate disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The student has written an essay that completely misses the prompt's actual question. The prompt asks about the agricultural advances and why people still go hungry around the world, along with solutions for global hunger. However, the student has mistakenly answered a completely different prompt regarding reducing air travel in response to climate change. Because the content of the response addresses an entirely different topic than what was required by the task instructions, it cannot be deemed to address the parts of the task appropriately. Consequently, Task Achievement is severely impacted by this misunderstanding, resulting in a low band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Despite the severe off-topic issue, the essay itself is internally well-structured and organized. The text flows logically from the introduction to body paragraphs discussing commerce and ecology, concluding with a clear summary. The writer uses logical connectors effectively (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Nevertheless', 'Furthermore', 'In conclusion'), demonstrating good paragraphing and logical progression. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly throughout the writing. Although the content fails the task response requirement, the structural and cohesive properties of the text demonstrate a much higher level of writing skill, aligning with the upper-middle bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The student displays a wide, sophisticated, and flexible range of vocabulary used with natural control. Excellent phrasing is evident throughout the text, such as 'accelerating climate crisis', 'eschew flying entirely', 'democratized cross-border tourism', 'ecological imperatives', and 'existential necessity'. Word choices and collocations are used with a strong awareness of academic style. There are virtually no lexical errors or awkward collocations in the text. The vocabulary is a clear highlight of this submission, showing precision and varied expression well above typical standards.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The student exhibits an impressive command of grammatical structures. A wide variety of complex sentences is used effortlessly, including participial phrases ('releasing vast quantities...'), conditional elements, and well-embedded relative clauses. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, with accurate punctuation and excellent control over complex syntax. There are no noticeable grammatical errors that impede communication in any way. The grammatical range and accuracy are sophisticated and robust, reflecting high-level proficiency in English syntax.
