Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite the advances made in agriculture sector, many proponents around the world still go hungry. In the upcoming essay, I have discussed the causes associated with this trend and also provided some remedies for this trend.

Taking into account the most important cause of this trend, population across the globe is rising very rapidly. So, to fulfill the needs of this population, it is necessary to grow grains in a huge number; but owing to mass urbanization, the number of farms and the fertile land suitable for agricultural production is lacking. As a result less agricultural produce is gained and its consequence is people dying out of starvation.

Another reason for the problem is that majority of the farmers still use traditional methods for farming even though advanced tools are available leading to less production. It is obvious that if the production is less, it will not be able to fulfil the need of vast population and the problem of starvation will continue.

Now talking about some solution, the first solution could be the use of advanced technology for production and also hybrid manures and fertilizers. The benefit of doing so is that the production can be increased significantly and it will be sufficient enough to fulfil the needs of public and overcome the problem of starvation.

Secondly, government should prohibit the excessive use of fertile land for buidling tall apartment blocks or housing societies. So the fertile land can be saved and used for production. Hence it can solve the problem of starvation.

In conclusion, the problem of starvation is due to use of fertile land for infrastructural development and also due to negligence of farmer in using modern technology for farming. To overcome this, government should take disciplinary actions and also farmers should start using modern tools and hybrid technology for farming.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by identifying causes (population growth, urbanization, and traditional farming methods) and proposing solutions (advanced technology, hybrid fertilizers, and government regulations on land use). A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive or under-developed, such as the consequence of people dying out of starvation, which leans toward over-generalization. The introduction also contains a minor misinterpretation by referring to proponents rather than populations or people going hungry. Overall, the response adequately meets the requirements of Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the prompt with relevant, albeit somewhat limited, ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, utilizing basic transition markers like 'Taking into account', 'Another reason', and 'Secondly'. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression within paragraphs occasionally lacks fluidity, such as in the transition from population growth to urbanization. These features align well with the Band 6 descriptor, where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'urbanization', 'agricultural production', 'traditional methods', and 'infrastructural development'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and odd collocations, such as 'many proponents around the world still go hungry' (where 'proponents' is misused) and 'hybrid manures' or 'hybrid technology'. Spelling and word-choice errors do not severely impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. These characteristics place the lexical resource firmly at a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional and transitional structures such as 'It is obvious that if the production is less, it will not be able to fulfil...' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including article omissions ('majority of the farmers', 'government should prohibit'), singular/plural confusions ('less agricultural produce is gained and its consequence is people dying'), and typos like 'buidling'. While these errors occasionally require the reader to re-read, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
