Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring causes such as high population growth and low financial returns for farmers, alongside potential solutions including population control and better crop pricing. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and relies on broad generalisations rather than fully extended arguments. For instance, the mention of farmers protesting in Northern India is relevant, but the link between low crop rates and overall food scarcity is not thoroughly explained. The position is generally clear throughout, but the lack of deeper elaboration and specific examples prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, it fulfills the basic requirements of Task 2 by covering both the causes and solutions adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overall progression with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions separately, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. Phrases such as 'Highlighting the reasons of hungry world as firstly' and 'On the other side discussing the solution of it as' are awkward and disrupt the natural flow of ideas. Furthermore, referencing is not always clear, and some cohesive devices are used incorrectly. While the organizational structure is apparent, the clunky transitional phrases and mechanical linking prevent it from achieving a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic ideas about agriculture, population, and government intervention. There are attempts to use less common items such as 'inhabitants', 'neccesity', and 'innumerable', but these are frequently accompanied by spelling errors ('eassy', 'intrest', 'resullt', 'decresing') and minor collocation issues ('valuable profit of crops'). The range is somewhat limited, and repetitive phrasing ('food crisis', 'production of crops') appears throughout the text. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of lexical errors and limited control over precise phrasing place this response firmly in the band 5.5 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, article usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositional phrases. Examples include 'advent of technology has provided ease' (missing article), 'world still go hungry' (incorrect tense/form), 'many people faces' (agreement error), and run-on sentences like the concluding statement. These errors are frequent and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, although they rarely completely obscure the meaning. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, limiting the grammatical score.
