Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying why people still go hungry despite agricultural advances, citing factors like high prices, unemployment, and corruption, and offering solutions such as meal programmes and government schemes. However, the ideas are often repetitive and lack deep development or specific supporting examples. For instance, the student states that unemployment and high prices cause hunger, but fails to elaborate on how these factors interact on a broader scale. While a clear position is established, the arguments remain somewhat superficial and lack the extended elaboration required for higher bands, placing the response comfortably at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs discussing causes and solutions, and ending with a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive statements and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or used inaccurately, such as the frequent repetition of phrases like 'to begin with' and 'despite the advances made in agriculture'. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs are very short and consist of fragmented ideas rather than cohesive thematic units. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Therefore, a Band 5.5 is appropriate for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'agriculture', 'unemployment', 'corruption', and 'government schemes'. There are several noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'unemployement', 'whene', 'diiferent', and punctuation spacing issues around commas and periods. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and some expressions lack precision, such as 'sleep hungry' or 'one time meal'. While the language is generally understandable, the frequency of lexical errors and restricted vocabulary range typify a Band 5.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors occur throughout the text, including comma splices, missing articles, and awkward phrasing such as 'a man could go to any extent' and 'government should start some meal programmes for the needy ones, and shall see the employement rates also.' These errors occasionally cause difficulty or hesitation for the reader. Although the writer can construct basic communicative sentences, the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies prevents the response from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.0 a fair evaluation.
