Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is worth noting that in the last 50 years, technology has developed in the agricultural sector, like most farmers used cows or other animals to prepare the land and this was very time consuming, but after the invention of the tractor, preparing the land has become very easy and time saving. Despite all these things, many people around the world still starving for food and many circumstances like government, inflation, land etc. are responsible for this. Let's discuss this further.

Despite advances in agriculture, many people around the world are starving for food and on of the major reason for this can be a land because in so many countries the lands are not suitable for farming and without farming people go hungry. Moreover, government and inflation can also be major reason for this because in countries like Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen lands are not suitable for farming although poor government, growth of this nations, GDP and per capita income are very low which lead to a inflation and this can be reason for people who are starving for food.

There are few things which can solve this problem like there are so many charitable trust and NGOs around the world who supply food to the people who are starving. Also there are so many celebrities, influencer, youtubers who runs some programme for hungry people. Meanwhile, developed nations government can supply foods around the world for hungry people.

There are many circumstances due to which many people start starving but the humanity can help these by providing them food.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why people still go hungry despite agricultural advances, and what can be done about it. However, the ideas are relatively basic and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on land suitability and inflation touches on valid points, but the explanations are brief and somewhat repetitive. The suggestions for solutions rely heavily on general notions of NGOs, charities, and celebrities rather than deep systemic insights. While the prompt is answered, the development falls into the Band 5 to 6 range because the reasoning lacks depth, and the introduction includes informal conversational elements like 'Let us discuss this further' which detract from an appropriate academic register.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, reflecting an attempt to structure the introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by weak cohesive ties and mechanical transitions such as 'Despite all these things' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is at times unclear, as seen in phrases like 'responsibility for this' where the antecedent is vague. Paragraphing is present, but the body paragraphs group disparate thoughts together rather than developing a single coherent theme per paragraph. The overall arrangement is somewhat basic, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category for cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'starving for food', 'land', and 'farming'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'inflation', 'per capita income', and 'charitable trust', but these are accompanied by word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'poor government' instead of 'poor governance' or 'weak governance'. Spelling and word formation errors also appear, including 'nations' instead of 'nation's'. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, meeting the criteria for Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences often result in severe run-on sentences and punctuation errors. For example, the opening sentence spans several clauses linked primarily by coordinating conjunctions like 'and' rather than effective subordination. There are noticeable grammatical errors throughout, such as 'like most farmers used cows' (incorrect prepositional usage for examples) and 'on of the major reason' (subject-verb agreement and article errors). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5 score.
