Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying reasons for global hunger, such as unemployment, high food prices, and poor governmental distribution systems, while also offering solutions like supporting farmers and creating jobs. The position is generally clear throughout the text, and ideas are supported with examples, such as the references to Germany and the year 2020. However, some arguments and examples are under-developed or historically/factually muddled, which limits the depth of the discussion. For instance, the claim about Germany in 2010 stopping exports due to a lack of jobs is unclear and confusing. Despite these occasional minor gaps in development and logical leaps, all requirements of the prompt are covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized, and basic cohesive devices are present, such as 'Firstly', 'Finally', and 'In Conclusion'. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing is sometimes unclear, and transitional phrases are misused or awkward, as seen with 'throughout with unemployment' and 'Governament also mitigate the food due to export'. Furthermore, some sentences lack logical progression within paragraphs, making the flow somewhat disjointed for the reader. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5 category for cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to agriculture and society such as 'agriculture', 'employment', 'supermarkets', 'farmers', and 'international organisations'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the essay, including 'play' instead of 'plays', 'modren', 'governament', 'thier', 'foood', 'oppourtunities', and 'Carona'. There are also frequent word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'still seeking for food', 'the prices of meals is increases', and 'governace always flourish to helping them'. While these errors are noticeable and cause some difficulty, the vocabulary remains minimally adequate to convey the basic message, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('Agriculture play', 'the prices... is increases'), tense consistency ('governnament stops thier export'), and awkward phrasing ('people throughout with unemployment'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, with inconsistent capitalization and spacing around commas. Because complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty and errors are numerous, the grammar aligns with the Band 5 descriptor.
