Student answer (Band 6.5)

Although agriculture has improved greatly in recent years, millions of people around the world still suffer from hunger. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this problem and suggest some possible solutions.

There are several reasons why many people still do not have enough food. One major reason is poverty. In many developing countries, people do not have enough money to buy food even when it is available. Another reason is war and conflict. In countries affected by war, farms are destroyed, food supplies are interrupted, and people are forced to leave their homes. Climate change is also a serious problem because floods, droughts, and extreme weather reduce crop production. As a result, food becomes less available and more expensive.

There are several ways to solve this problem. First, governments should support poor farmers by providing better seeds, modern farming equipment, and training. This can help increase food production. Second, rich countries and international organizations should provide food aid and financial support to countries facing hunger. In addition, governments should improve roads and transport systems so that food can be delivered to remote areas quickly. Finally, reducing food waste by businesses and households can make more food available for those in need.

In conclusion, despite the progress in agriculture, hunger continues because of poverty, war, and climate change. However, with better government support, international cooperation, and improved food distribution, this global problem can be reduced. So, everyone should be provided food and help our people in order to fulfil their needs

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying both the causes of hunger and proposing actionable solutions. You successfully explore multiple facets of the issue, such as poverty, conflict, and climate change in the second paragraph, and offer clear countermeasures in the third. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the point regarding poverty could be extended further with a specific example of how economic disparities prevent food access. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be fully explored with greater depth and extension, avoiding any tendency to present points in a list-like fashion without deeper analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear overall progression, guiding the reader logically from the introduction through the causes and solutions to a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'First', 'Second', and 'In addition', though some of these links feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. To progress further, you should aim for more subtle and flexible referencing and seamless transitions between sentences rather than relying heavily on sequential signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using standard terms relevant to the topic like 'crop production', 'international organizations', and 'food distribution'. There are also successful attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'interrupted' and 'remote areas'. However, occasional limitations in word choice and slight awkwardness prevent a higher mark, as seen in the concluding sentence with the phrase 'help our people in order to fulfil their needs', which sounds slightly repetitive and unnatural. To achieve a higher band, incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated phrasing and idioms with precise collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with a good control of basic structures. You demonstrate the ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'In many developing countries, people do not have enough money to buy food even when it is available.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly towards the end of the text where the final sentence ('So, everyone should be provided food and help our people...') lacks structural precision and accurate prepositional use. To improve, aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure tighter punctuation control across all paragraphs.
