Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to discuss the causes of hunger and suggests potential solutions, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of using 'modren technology' and training farmers is introduced briefly without sufficient elaboration or concrete examples to fully support the argument. The position is sometimes unclear, and the overall treatment of the prompts is superficial. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to extend their ideas fully, providing clear explanations and relevant examples for both the causes of global hunger and the specific measures that can be taken to resolve the issue.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the internal logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'conversely' and 'in addition' to link ideas that do not logically contrast or build upon one another in the intended manner. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases where pronoun reference is weak. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure a more logical progression of ideas from sentence to sentence and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices without repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word formation throughout the text, such as 'modren', 'obbseverd', 'essiential', 'possibilie', 'pespective', and 'reqiurements'. These errors demonstrate a lack of control over basic and less common lexical items, and on occasion, they cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to correct word forms and spelling, and attempt to use less common items with greater precision and awareness of collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms and tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and punctuation, such as 'alot of food production are essiential' and fragment sentences like 'which is possibilie when we add...'. These frequent errors often strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To reach the next level, the writer must develop better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct agreement and tense usage, and produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex sentence patterns.
