Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons behind global hunger and proposing relevant solutions. The essay covers multiple causes, such as poverty, political instability, climate change, and food waste, and offers corresponding solutions like improving distribution systems and promoting sustainable agriculture. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the mention of food waste is quite brief and lacks further elaboration or a specific example. Similarly, while solutions are introduced, they tend to be listed rather than fully extended with supporting explanations. This places the response firmly within the band that covers all parts of the task, though certain points remain under-developed or concise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into logical paragraphs, fulfilling the requirements of the lower band. Introduction and conclusion paragraphs are present, and body paragraphs are separated by main themes (causes versus solutions). Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'To commence with', 'Moving further', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the abrupt phrasing in 'The most prominent reason is that Poverty and lack of purchasing power'. Additionally, referencing and paragraph internal progression can feel disjointed, preventing the essay from achieving a fully fluid, higher-level logical flow throughout. Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently, but the management of cohesive ties requires smoother integration.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully communicating ideas about agriculture, poverty, and food distribution. There are conscious attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'multifaceted approach', 'sustainable agriculture', and 'agricultural productivity'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, spelling mistakes, and issues with word formation, such as 'diasters' instead of disasters, 'countruies' instead of countries, 'shopholders' instead of shopkeepers, and 'singlr' instead of single. Furthermore, collocation and phrasing occasionally feel unnatural, such as 'suffer in hunger' instead of 'suffer from hunger'. These lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument, but they prevent the vocabulary score from rising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include missing articles or preposition errors like 'in poverty' versus 'is that poverty', fragment sentences such as 'Because poor people cannot afford sufficient food', and subject-verb agreement issues like 'farmers in developing countruies lack of modern technology'. Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods, are also present. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to characterize a control of grammar that includes some noticeable inaccuracies and faulty complex structures.
