Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying reasons why people still go hungry despite agricultural advancements and proposing potential solutions. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. The discussion surrounding the causes of hunger, such as rising population and lack of fertile land in Africa, is relevant but somewhat generalized and under-developed. Similarly, the second body paragraph introduces several measures, including ensuring food storage and raising public awareness, but these solutions lack extended explanation and specific examples. The writer maintains a clear overall position throughout the essay, yet the depth of support for each main point prevents the response from reaching a higher level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as causes in the second paragraph and solutions in the third. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or faulty cohesion. Transitional phrases and referencing are occasionally unclear or repetitive, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences within the body paragraphs. While the logical flow is generally maintained, the somewhat rigid and repetitive use of cohesive devices prevents the text from achieving a smoother and more natural progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'contemporary era', 'prominent reason', and 'inhabitants ratio'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation throughout the response, such as 'healp' instead of help, 'advancment' instead of advancement, 'greter' instead of greater, 'netizens' instead of citizens, 'masures' instead of measures, and 'inproductive' instead of unproductive. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes occasionally impede communication or distract the reader, though the overall meaning remains decipherable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied syntactic structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding articles, subject-verb agreement, prepositional usage, and sentence boundaries. Examples include 'in globe a plenty of people still hungry', 'how to overcomes with this hurdles', 'the inhabitants ratio have been increasing', 'in many countries they did not have fertile land', and 'foods is not reach to the needy person'. While these errors do not completely obscure the message, they persist throughout the text and require effort from the reader to parse.
