Student answer (Band 6.0)

Although there has been improvements in agriculture, alot of people still go hungry all over the world this might be so due to climate change and low access to farm inputs. To solve the problem farmers should follow morden farming techniques and farm inputs should be affordable and accessible. This essay will explore these causes and how it can be solved.

Climate change has been the cause of poor harvest in most countries. Farmers are still depending on rain to water their plants hence low yields. For example, in Countries like Malawi the rainy season runs from December to March and the staple food for Malawi is Maize which takes three months to mature. Due to climate change you find that the rainy season is over around February before maize matures this leads to low harvest. To solve this problem farmers should rely more on irrigation farming than depending on rainfall.

Farm inputs are not affordable and accessible. It is difficult for rural farmers to access farm inputs due to road networks and inavailability of manufacturing companies in rural Malawi. Also in many cases the prices are very high. For example for crops to produce well there is need for fertilizer and there is no fertilizer producing company in Malawi. The country rely on exporting it which make it more expensive and not affordable. To solve the problem both government and Non government agencies should work towards providing farm inputs for rural farmers.

In conclusion climate change and poor access of farm inputs are the main causes of hunger in the world and relying on mordern farming techniques might help to solve the problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying causes such as climate change and low access to farm inputs, and proposing solutions like modern farming techniques and making inputs accessible. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of the rainy season in Malawi provides a relevant example, but the discussion surrounding solutions remains somewhat general and lacks deep elaboration. The position is clear throughout, but further extension of the proposed measures would be needed to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing causes and solutions, and finishing with a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as climate change in one paragraph and farm inputs in another. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and referencing between sentences can occasionally be improved. To reach a higher standard, the transitions between paragraphs and sentences could be smoother and more sophisticated, showing a better control of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'staple food' and 'manufacturing companies', but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'alot', 'morden', and 'inavailability', along with issues in collocation like 'low access' instead of 'limited access'. These inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range that requires greater precision and correct spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the country rely on exporting it'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the country rely'), and run-on sentences or missing punctuation (e.g., 'For example for crops...'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication. A higher band would require a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and stricter control over articles and subject-verb agreements.
