Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite significant developments in the agriculture sector, people are unable to buy food, and despite much technology, people are still hungry.

This essay will discuss the reasons and suggest several solutions to address these problems. There are several reasons; one of the main reasons is corruption in the government. Corruption causes injustice and an unfair distribution of resources, which leads to inflation; as a result, poor people are unable to buy food. There are numerous examples of countries which are fighting hunger and corruption. One more reason is the outbreak of war in the world. In today's era, countries are dependent on each other; for example, one country is trading oil and gas with agriculture food. War will cause unrest, which results in poverty; due to this, people are unable to buy food.

Several measures could be taken to deal with these issues. First, the government must be digitised to have a minimum risk of corruption; providing more powers to justice departments will lead to accountability, which will prevent inflation and people will have more purchasing power. Another solution is to stop the wars. Nowadays, wars are causing a huge impact on people's daily lives, and poor people are falling below the power to buy food; a stop to wars will bring prosperity and peace to people's lives.

Overall, there are several reasons for hunger, including corruption and war, and the solution to these will bring ease to the world, and people will have food in their homes, and hunger will be erased.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying causes of global hunger, such as government corruption and war, and offering relevant solutions like digitisation and peacebuilding. However, some ideas are under-developed and lack specificity. For instance, the link between corruption, inflation, and the inability to buy food is stated generally without strong supporting examples or deep exploration. Similarly, the explanation of how war impacts food trade remains broad. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend their arguments with more detailed explanations, concrete examples, and fully fleshed-out consequences rather than relying on generalised statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions separately, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like "there are several reasons" and "another solution is." Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition into the example where oil and gas trading is mentioned without sufficient contextual setup. To improve cohesion further, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of transitional devices to link clauses and sentences smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points with terms like "developments in the agriculture sector," "distribution of resources," and "digitised." The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as "accountability," "prosperity," and "inflation," though some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural, such as "agriculture food" or "falling below the power to buy food." Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. For a higher score, the student should incorporate a broader range of sophisticated lexical items and precise collocations related to global economics and food security.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and result clauses like "Corruption causes injustice and an unfair distribution of resources, which leads to inflation." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as run-on structures and slightly awkward phrasing like "a stop to wars will bring prosperity," but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences remain understandable. While complex sentences are attempted, they sometimes contain minor flaws in preposition use or clause integration. To progress, the writer should focus on enhancing control over complex grammatical patterns and ensuring greater accuracy in punctuation and sentence boundary demarcation.
