Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite advances in agriculture, many people around the world still suffer from hunger. Meanwhile, not only the causes of this situation but also the remedies associated with it will be explained in the following paragraphs, along with relevant examples.

Discussing the the contributing factors, the most evident one is the unequal distribution of food and resources. To justify it further, although the world produces substantial quantities of food, people in poorer regions may lack sufficient income. For instance, food may be available in nearby cities, but in rural communities may be unable to afford it or transport it efficiently. Furthermore, another one of the factors is war and political instability. To be more precise, wars can destroy farmland, crops, food supplies and transportation systems. They can also force people to leave their homes and lose their sources of income.

However, there are plenty of preventive steps related to this phenomenon. The most significant one is governments and international organizations to improve food distribution and support vulnerable communities. To be more specific, investment in roads, storage facilities and affordable transportation can reduce food waste and enable surplus food to reach areas experiencing shortages. For example, governments could establish efficient storage networks in rural regions so that harvested crops remain available throughout the year. In addition, another one of the preventive steps is support farmers with modern technology. In other words, governments should help farmers use modern agricultural technology, irrigation systems, better seeds and farming equipment. This can increase food production, especially in developing countries.

To conclude, it can be said the possible causes of hunger are unequal access to food and resources and war and political instability, while the productive solution are not only improve food distribution but also supporting farmers through sustainable modern technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying both the causes of global hunger and offering actionable solutions. The position is clear throughout, and the main ideas are relevant. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; while the discussion on unequal distribution and infrastructure is adequately supported with examples like storage facilities and transport, the points on war and political instability are somewhat brief and lack detailed elaboration. The response successfully meets all requirements, showing elements of higher task fulfillment through a clear focus on the prompt, though fuller extension across all body paragraphs is needed to reach the next tier.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from causes in the second paragraph to solutions in the third. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct arguments. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'To be more specific', and 'In addition', but referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, as seen with repeated formulaic phrases like 'another one of the factors is'. Cohesion functions adequately to make the overall meaning clear, though smoother and more varied transitional links would elevate the structural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate ideas about agriculture, economics, and governance. There are attempts to use less common items and subject-specific vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure', 'distribution', and 'vulnerable communities'. However, there are some word choice, collocation, and word form inaccuracies that occasionally reveal strain, such as 'support farmers with modern technology' instead of 'supporting farmers with modern technology' or 'the productive solution are not only improve'. These spelling and lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the mid-band range for vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing dependent clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are some errors in grammar, agreement, and phrasing present throughout the text, such as 'the most significant one is governments and international organizations to improve' (missing infinitive/gerund consistency), 'may be unable to afford it' with a missing subject in the relative clause, and 'the productive solution are not only improve' (subject-verb agreement and parallel structure errors). These errors in grammar and punctuation occur with some regularity but rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of basic structures while demonstrating developing control over more complex patterns.
