IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry.

Why is this the case?

What can be done about this problem?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, there are many advancements done in the agricultural field all around the world. Despite these changes, many people are unable to feed themselves. This is because the majority of crops grown are not reaching the local community due to transportation issues, as well as the huge amount of agricultural goods are exported outside. These problems can be mitigated by cultivating more crops and making it accessible to reach the poor.

Due to technological advancements in agricultural areas, farmers are able to grow a wide variety of crops to remove the hunger from their country. However, their purpose fails because of certain reasons. The pathway to transport various crops around the region is inaccessible for most people. They cannot drive their vehicles to some rural areas, making it impossible for the food to reach them. For example, many people in the villages rely on eating lentils and bread instead of fruits and vegetables. Moreover, the government generates revenue by exporting crops in the neighboring countries. This leads to the shortage of crops for most people in the society and insufficient food to fill their stomachs.

These issues can be solved completely by growing more crops to sufficiently meet the desired quantity of food resources to eat and export. In this way, more food will be accessible to remove the hunger for many people. In addition, the government should allocate a separate budget for creating roads, especially in those regions where trucks and cars cannot be reached. For instance, smooth, silky roads can increase the accessibility of food in many areas.

In conclusion, lack of efficient transportation and export of food can increase hunger around the world. However, cultivating a variety of crops and providing the accessibility of roads can alleviate these problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a relevant focus: you identify transport barriers and crop exports as causes, then propose increased production and road investment. The examples about rural communities and limited access to fresh food help illustrate the problem. However, some ideas are not fully explained. For instance, the claim that exports create shortages would be stronger if you explained how export decisions or unequal distribution leave local people without affordable food. Similarly, growing more crops is presented as a solution without considering whether the additional produce would reach or be affordable to those who are hungry. Develop these links and support the proposals with more specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, a paragraph offering solutions, and a conclusion. The progression from causes to remedies is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This already gives the essay a coherent arrangement. To make the connections more natural and precise, avoid relying mainly on familiar transition phrases and clarify references such as “These problems” and “These issues” by naming the specific cause or solution. The conclusion also repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. More varied referencing and smoother links between claims and examples would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “agricultural field,” “transportation,” “exporting crops,” and “allocate a separate budget.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “inaccessible” and “revenue.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits clarity and flexibility. “Remove the hunger” and “making it accessible to reach the poor” do not express the intended ideas naturally, while “smooth, silky roads” is an unsuitable description in this context. Aim for accurate combinations such as “reduce hunger,” “ensure food reaches low-income communities,” and “well-maintained roads.” Greater precision would make the argument sound more fluent and academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because of certain reasons” and “where trucks and cars cannot be reached.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and verb patterns. For example, “the huge amount of agricultural goods are exported” has a mismatch between the singular subject “amount” and the plural verb; “a large amount … is exported” would be consistent. In “making it impossible for the food to reach them,” the construction is understandable, but the surrounding sentence could be expressed more directly. Review agreement, articles, and clause structure to improve accuracy while retaining complex sentences.
