Student answer (Band 6.0)

A lot of developments has been made in the agriculture, but still there many people around the world which still go hungry. In this essay we will discuss factors affecting the hunger problem of the world and will provide some of the solutions to prevent these issues.

I believe the one of the most common issue is the irregular policies of the government regarding food towards the people. Government has not made their priorities straight around the world, everyone now believes in the capitalist society where everyone have to earn for their own. For example most governments spend billions of dollars every year on the defense budget however, their own people go hungry. These governments should focus on developing the means to overcome poverty and tacle issues issues related to hunger.

Furthermore, every year a lot of food is wasted around the world due to less demand from the food companies so farmers dump their yeilds which is later wasted. The main cause of hunger is not because of the shortage of food around the world it is because the policies and extra expense that no one wants to do so that poor can get benefit from and have decent meals. As an example, the food that is wasted in the restaurants and farmers who dump their vegetables due to low demand every year should be provided to the poor with proper channels from government. It should be resposibility of govenment to ensure that no poor person sleep hungry. There should be strict policies intact to help reduce the wastage of food and that food should be provided to poor people.

In conclusion, these advancements in the agriculture are nothing if there are not any policies that ensure that every person should deserve to eat food. It should be responsibility of the government to check the people's living conditions instead of spending billions of dollars on defence, they should spend on the poor to help them grow and come out of povety.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it identifies government priorities and food waste as reasons people remain hungry, then proposes poverty-focused spending, food redistribution and stricter policies. The position that hunger persists because food is not distributed effectively is clear, and the examples about defence budgets and discarded produce are relevant. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that governments prioritise defence over hunger would be stronger with an explanation of how this affects access to food, while the reference to food companies’ “less demand” is not clearly connected to why farmers discard crops. Develop each cause-and-solution link more precisely and support it with a specific, realistic example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Its progression from government policy to food waste and then to proposed action is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links between ideas are occasionally mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph moves from low demand to food waste and then to government responsibility without fully explaining the connections, and “these issues” in the introduction is vague. Use more precise referencing and make the cause-and-effect links explicit within paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main points, including “agriculture,” “defense budget,” “food is wasted,” “farmers” and “poverty.” It also attempts more formal expressions such as “proper channels” and “living conditions.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “irregular policies,” “extra expense that no one wants to do,” “policies intact,” “yeilds,” “resposibility” and “povety.” Repetition of “government,” “poor” and “food” also makes the expression less flexible. Build a bank of accurate collocations for food distribution and public policy, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “farmers dump their yeilds which is later wasted” and a conditional structure in “if there are not any policies.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “A lot of developments has been made,” “there many people,” “everyone have to earn,” and “the one of the most common issue,” which show problems with agreement, sentence construction and articles. Some long sentences also need clearer punctuation and control, particularly the sentence beginning “The main cause of hunger is not because…”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and article use, and divide complex ideas into well-controlled sentences.
