Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is an ongoing debate that despite of technological advances have taken place in agriculture, people are starving due to hunger. While this problem comes from several factors, practical solutions exist to address it effectively.
One of the main causes of hunger is waste and unequal distribution. This is largely because of large amount of food is lost or thrown away before reaching consumers. While the poor transport and a storage is another reason people slept without eating food. Moreover, a poverty and conflict stop people getting food that exists because the world produces enough food, but people without income or safe access cannot purchase or recieve it, especially in war zones. For instance, in Yeme, years of civil war have left millions of people facing severe food shortages. This clearly demonstrates that lack of transport, income, and storage are the major concerns of food shortages.
One effective solution to tackle this issue is that government should support the underprivileged. This is the effective way to help the people by cash transfers, school meals and food programmes give vulnerable people a reliable source of food. In addition, by reducing the food wastage and improving transport, storage, distribution, and unsold food facilities and therefore food to the needy ones. For instance, France passed a law in 2016 requiring large supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities instead of throwing it away. This cleraly highlights that authorities can make a change in communities and ensure food must reach to every households.
In conclusion, hunger persists because of poverty, conflicts, waste and poor distribution, while government can reduce it with safety nets and cutting food wastage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both questions and maintains a clear focus on why hunger persists and how it could be reduced. It identifies relevant causes—food waste, weak transport and storage, poverty, and conflict—and supports the discussion with the example of Yemen. The proposed measures, including cash transfers, school meals, food programmes, and supermarket donations, are also relevant, with France providing a useful example. This range of ideas and support makes the response effective. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the link between poor storage and people going hungry could be developed with a clearer account of how food is lost. Explaining how the proposed measures address particular causes would make the response more fully developed and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a concise conclusion. The progression from identifying causes to suggesting responses is easy to follow, and examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. This meets the requirements for a coherent response, but cohesion is not consistently smooth. Some links are mechanical, and the sentence beginning “In addition, by reducing the food wastage…” does not connect grammatically to the preceding sentence, making the proposed action difficult to follow. The reference to “This” in “This clearly demonstrates” also has several possible antecedents. Use complete sentences and clearer references, and vary transitions by showing the precise relationship between each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “unequal distribution,” “vulnerable,” “food shortages,” “cash transfers,” and “food programmes.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the examples show an attempt to use language suited to an academic discussion. Some less natural word choices and collocations limit precision, however: “a poverty,” “the poor transport,” and “unsold food facilities” do not express the intended meanings clearly. There are also spelling errors, including “recieve,” “Yeme,” and “cleraly.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but careful proofreading and more natural phrasing would improve control. Aim to use precise combinations such as “inadequate transport and storage” and “facilities for redistributing unsold food.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay attempts a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in the opening and clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “that.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make individual sentences awkward or unclear. For example, “despite of technological advances have taken place” combines incompatible structures; use “despite technological advances” or “although technological advances have taken place.” In “This is the effective way … give vulnerable people,” the sentence structure does not clearly connect the proposed method to its examples. Articles and agreement also need attention, as in “a poverty” and “government should support.” Practise building complete sentences around one main clause, then check articles, verb forms, and agreement to make complex ideas more accurate.
