IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the average proportions of sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars present in meals which is consumed in the USA.
Overall, the proportion of sugar is highest in the snacks, whereas sodium and saturated fats has the highest percentage in the dinner making it the unhealthiest meal. All of the nutrients show lowest percentage for breakfast making it nutritous and healthy for the people in the USA.
In terms of the dinner, sodium contributes the highest percentage of 43%, followed by 37% of saturated fats and the lowest percentage of sugar (23%). In contrast, the breakfast has only 14% of sodium and same percentage of saturated fat and added sugar (16%).
On the other hand, the lunch has 29% of sodium and 26% of saturated fat present, while least amount of sugar present of 19%. However, the snacks has highest percentage of sugar in it (42%) and lowest percent of sodium (14%). Saturated fats are 21%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main contrasts accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead in added sugar. The figures you report for each meal are consistent with the chart, and the overview gives the reader a clear summary before the details. This is a well-focused response that covers the key information. However, the claim that breakfast is the lowest meal for all three nutrients is not accurate: breakfast and snacks both have 14% sodium, and breakfast’s 16% saturated fat is lower than the other meals, but its added sugar is not the lowest because lunch is 19% and breakfast is 16%—in fact, breakfast is lowest there. More importantly, calling breakfast “healthy” and dinner “the unhealthiest” goes beyond what the chart establishes; it shows nutrient proportions, not an overall health assessment. Keep conclusions tied closely to the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing meal figures. Information is generally grouped logically, and transitions such as “In terms of the dinner,” “In contrast,” and “On the other hand” help signal comparisons. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. To make progression more controlled, avoid using contrast markers where the relationship is not a strong contrast, and connect related comparisons more directly. For example, the final paragraph moves from lunch to snacks with “However,” although it is mainly continuing the meal-by-meal description. Some references are also awkward, such as “the breakfast” and “the snacks,” which slightly interrupt the flow. A more consistent pattern—comparing the highest and lowest values for each nutrient—would make the organisation more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportions,” “contributes,” “highest percentage,” and “lowest percentage,” so the topic is clear. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “percentage” and “present.” Some collocations are unnatural, such as “the breakfast has” and “lowest percent of sodium,” while “nutritous” is misspelled and “unhealthiest meal” overstates what the chart can show. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to vary reporting language with accurate terms such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “proportion,” and use neutral descriptions rather than judging meals as healthy or unhealthy. Check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast structure in “whereas sodium and saturated fats…” and a relative clause in “meals which is consumed.” Meaning is usually understandable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction occur often enough to limit accuracy. For example, “meals which is consumed” should use a plural verb, and “sodium and saturated fats has” requires a plural verb. In “All of the nutrients show lowest percentage,” the article is missing, while “the snacks has” again has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence beginning “In contrast, the breakfast…” also uses an unnecessary article. Practise checking each subject and verb, and use articles consistently. More accurate control of these basic patterns, alongside varied sentence forms, would strengthen the report.
