Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie charts illustrate the total percentage of nutrients like sodium, saturated fat and sugar in the daily meals like dinner, breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Overall, dinner had highest amount of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks contain the highest amount of sugar.

First of all, dinner contains the highest percentage of sodium, which is 43 percentage and 37 percentage of saturated fats, while only 23 percentage of sugar. Similarly, lunch contains 29 percent of sodium, 26 percent of saturated fats and 19 percent of sugar. The snacks contain the most sugar among all meals; that is 42 percent while 21 percent of Saturated fat and only 14 percent of sodium.

However, breakfast contains the lowest amount of such things like 16 percent of saturated fat and added sugar and only 14 percent of sodium. Therefore, the given charts suggest that among all the meals, breakfast is the one of the healthiest meal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts, including the highest and lowest values for each nutrient across the four meal types. You have provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the charts. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned '16 percent of saturated fat and added sugar' for breakfast, but the chart shows 16% for saturated fat and 16% for added sugar separately. Additionally, ensure that comparisons are more analytical rather than just listing figures. Overall, the response covers the requirements well and provides a clear summary of the information presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by meal type. The use of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Similarly', and 'However' helps to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the report. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural rather than mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, and the information is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the data, such as 'illustrate', 'percentage', and 'nutrients'. However, there is some repetition of basic phrasing like 'contains the highest percentage of'. To improve, incorporate more varied reporting verbs and synonyms for 'contains' or 'amount'. For example, you could use 'comprises', 'accounts for', or 'constitutes'. Additionally, be careful with word forms; you used 'percentage' where 'percent' was required in several instances. Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'dinner had highest amount' (missing 'the'), 'the one of the healthiest meal' (should be 'one of the healthiest meals'), and 'such things like'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on article usage (the/a/an) and subject-verb agreement. Practicing more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participial phrases, would also enhance your grammatical range.
