Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as dinner and snacks having the highest percentages. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the comparison 'dinner of sodium accounted for 43%... it was 1 percentage points higher than snacks of added sugar' is confusing because the data points are not directly comparable in that way. Additionally, some descriptions are unclear, such as 'snacks and breakfast of sodium were broadly similar, representing 14% each'. While the main features are selected, the reporting lacks precision and clarity in several places, which hinders the overall impact of the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'By contrast'. However, the flow of ideas is occasionally disjointed. Some sentences are difficult to follow due to awkward phrasing, such as 'dinner of sodium accounted for 43%... it was 1 percentage points higher than snacks of added sugar'. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track which nutrient or meal is being discussed. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression between sentences could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'disparity', and 'nutrient'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'dinner of sodium' instead of 'sodium levels in dinner' or 'dinner's sodium content'. The phrase 'lunch of same nutrient' is also grammatically and lexically awkward. While the range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, the lack of precision in describing the data limits the score. Spelling is generally accurate, but the phrasing often feels unnatural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'the units are given in proportions' (lowercase start), 'dinner of sodium accounted for 43%, it was 1 percentage points higher' (comma splice and subject-verb agreement error), and 'snacks added sugar and saturated was half of attributing 21% and 42%' (unclear syntax). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. A greater focus on sentence boundary control and subject-verb agreement is needed to reach a higher band.
