Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three nutrients and identifies the main features, such as the high levels of sodium and saturated fat at dinner and the high sugar content in snacks. However, the reporting of data is occasionally imprecise or confusing, such as the statement 'Americans are eating 14% of sodium for breakfast and snacks', which conflates two categories. Additionally, the comparison between categories could be more analytical. While the main trends are identified, the lack of a clear, cohesive overview of the data relationships prevents a higher score. The response meets the requirements of the task but lacks the depth of analysis expected for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'In addition to that' and the fragmented sentence structure starting with 'while, 26%...'. The progression of ideas is logical, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be better managed to ensure that comparisons are grouped more effectively rather than just listing percentages.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'consumed', and 'ingested'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in a three regular meal' (should be 'three regular meals') and 'citizens of america' (should be capitalized). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and precise terminology to describe trends and data points, avoiding minor errors that slightly distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The maximum proportion of sodium and saturated fat are recorded' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'while, 26% of Saturated fat...'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the misuse of commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and more accurate use of complex sentence structures to improve clarity and precision.
