Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified some key features, the analysis is fragmented and lacks a clear, cohesive summary. The overview provided is somewhat confusing, and the data reporting is repetitive and lacks the necessary synthesis required for a high band score. To improve, ensure you group data logically rather than listing figures meal by meal, and provide a more comprehensive comparison of the trends across all four categories. The under-length penalty is applied here as the response is 19 words short.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay lacks a clear logical progression. The paragraphing is disjointed, and the transition between the different meals is abrupt. You rely heavily on simple lists of percentages rather than using cohesive devices to link ideas or compare the nutrients effectively. For example, phrases like 'in breakfast' and 'during lunch' are used, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is repetitive and lacks flow. To improve, use linking words such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'similarly' to connect your observations and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'percentage', 'amount', and 'eaten'. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'maximum containing' instead of 'highest concentration' and 'saturated fate' (a spelling error). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'intake', 'constitute', and 'account for', and ensure you check your spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammar is frequently inaccurate, which often impedes the clarity of the information. There are many sentence fragments and missing verbs, such as '29 sodium and 26 % fat as compare to 19 % sugar', which lacks a main verb. Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. To improve, focus on constructing complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and practice using complex structures like relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to add variety to your writing.
