IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie charts illustrates the consumption of the Sodium, Saturated fats and Added sugar in the breakfast, dinner, lunch, and snacks.

Consumption of the Sodium is 43% in the dinner, whereas in snacks, and breakfast its consumption is just 14%. In the lunch, its consumption is moderate that is 29%.

Secondly, we have the information about the Saturated fat, and same like the Sodium its consumption in dinner is top of the chart.

According to the chart its consumption is about 37% in dinner, whereas in breakfast its percentage is least of all and it is 16%.

Moreover, in USA saturated fats consumption in snacks and lunch is lower, as compare to the dinner but relatively greater then the breakfast.

Third chart gives the states related to the percentages of consumption of the Added sugar in USA meals. Conversely, it shows the highest consumption in snacks, while other two were consumed in more quantity in dinner than other meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three nutrients and identifies key trends, such as the high consumption of sodium and saturated fats at dinner, and added sugar in snacks. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for Task 1. The data presentation is somewhat mechanical, listing percentages rather than synthesizing the information to highlight significant comparisons or contrasts. While the main features are identified, the lack of a cohesive summary and the limited analytical depth prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you include a clear introductory overview that highlights the most striking differences across the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is somewhat disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'whereas', 'moreover', 'conversely'), they are sometimes used incorrectly or in a repetitive manner. The transition between the discussion of sodium and saturated fats is abrupt. Furthermore, the final paragraph is slightly confusing in its reference to 'other two', which lacks clarity. Improving the use of referencing and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision. Phrases like 'top of the chart' and 'states related to the percentages' are informal or slightly awkward. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'greater then' (should be 'greater than') and 'as compare to' (should be 'compared to'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'predominant', 'account for', or 'fluctuate', and ensure accurate usage of comparative structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The given pie charts illustrates') and incorrect prepositional usage ('in the dinner' instead of 'at dinner'). There are also errors with articles ('the Sodium', 'the Saturated fats') and comparative forms ('relatively greater then the breakfast'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for article usage would be highly beneficial.
