Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the highest and lowest nutrient intakes across different meal times. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the trends. While the key data points are mentioned, the comparison between the three nutrients could be more integrated. The introductory sentence is slightly awkward and contains grammatical errors that affect clarity. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant differences rather than just listing data points. The response addresses the prompt, but the development of the comparison is limited, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and occasionally mechanical (e.g., 'In saturated fat', 'In sugar'). There are instances where the logical flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, particularly in the final paragraph where the mention of 'medium level' for lunch and dinner is confusing given the previous data. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'medium ratios of meals', 'simply simplify by', and 'sugar contain'. These errors occasionally make the text difficult to follow. The range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptors, and there is a lack of sophisticated or topic-specific terminology that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. To improve, focus on using more precise nouns and verbs to describe data trends, such as 'proportion', 'account for', or 'fluctuate', and ensure collocations are used correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'lowest amount of three nutrients get'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'all of that explained because it is harmful'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To reach a higher band, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and reducing the number of errors in complex sentences.
