IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given graphs represents the average percentages of nutrients namely sodium, saturated fats and added sugars consumed in four meals breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks by the people residing in USA.
From an overall standpoint, it is immediately clear that people consume high amount of sugar while eating snacks while sodium is noticeably highly consumed during dinner whereas saturated fats doesn't lead any categories and it is consumed in moderate amount.
In terms of totals, sodium is 14% in breakfast and snacks while being highly consumed in dinner by 43%, it is obvious that added sugar is consumed highest in comparison of fats and sodium in snacks by 42% while being the lowest during lunch by 19%. Saturated fats is observed to be consumed in moderate amount throughout all meals only exceeding in snacks from sodium by 21%. All three nutrients are in the least percent only during breakfast by sugar and fats being at 16% while sodium at 14%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as the high consumption of sugar in snacks and sodium in dinner. However, the analysis is somewhat hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, stating that sodium is 14% in breakfast and snacks is correct, but the claim that saturated fats 'doesn't lead any categories' is vague, and the comparison regarding snacks (exceeding sodium by 21%) is confusingly phrased. While the main features are selected, the reporting lacks the precision required for a higher band. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated to highlight the most significant differences between the nutrients.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for a task of this length. There is a logical progression from an introduction to an overview and then to specific details. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In terms of totals' and 'it is obvious that'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final sentence where the comparison between nutrients and meals becomes difficult to follow. The flow of ideas is generally coherent, but the internal structure of the sentences could be improved to better link the data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the charts with some success. There are attempts to use specific terms like 'consumed', 'moderate amount', and 'exceeding', which are appropriate. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'lead any categories' and 'in comparison of'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive structures to describe the data. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and precise terminology to describe trends and comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('graphs represents', 'fats doesn't lead') and awkward phrasing ('by sugar and fats being at 16%'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are run-on or lack clarity due to poor clause construction. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and clearer sentence boundaries would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
