The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The three pie charts illustrate the average of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA.

Overall, dinner accounts for the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fats, whereas snacks contain the highest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast generally contributes the smallest or one of the smallest proportions of all three nutrients.

Regarding sodium, dinner makes up the highest percentages, at 43% followed by lunch at 29% Breakfast and snacks each account for 14% . A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat. Dinner represents 37% while lunch contributes 29% and snacks 21% . Breakfast has the lowest figure, at only 16% .

The figures for added sugar are quite different. Snacks contains the greatest proportion, at 42%, followed by dinner at 23% and lunch at 19% . Breakfast has the lowest percentage, at 16%. Thus, while dinner is the main source of sodium and saturated fat, snacks are the major sources of added sugar.
