Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie charts represent the average amount of three types of nutrients - sodium, saturated fat and added sugar - that are consumed by Americans during four meals.
Overall, the highest percentage of sodium and saturated fat is contained in dinner, while the largest portion of added sugar is eaten through snacks. The smallest proportion of each nutrient is consumed with breakfast.
As regards sodium and saturated fat consumption, the patterns are quite similar. The majority of these nutrients is consumed by Americans during dinner and accounts for 43% and 37% respectively. The second leader is lunch which contains 29% of sodium and 26% of saturated fat. The breakfast represents the lowest percentages at 14% and 16%.
In terms of added sugar, the chart shows the different trend. The largest amount of sugar is eaten through snacks, while dinner and lunch account for 23% and 19%. Breakfast shows the least percentage accounting for 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies the main features of the data and provides a clear overview. You have successfully selected the key trends, such as the dominance of dinner for sodium and saturated fat, and the unique position of snacks for added sugar. The comparisons are relevant and accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully integrated; for instance, you mentioned the percentages for dinner and lunch but omitted the specific figures for snacks regarding sodium and saturated fat, which would have provided a more comprehensive summary. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from general trends to specific nutrient categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'As regards', and 'In terms of' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different nutrient trends. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the different meals and nutrients is clearly established throughout the text, making the information easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'smallest proportion', 'the second leader', and 'different trend' are used appropriately. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the data, such as 'predominant source' or 'marginal contribution'. There are no spelling errors, and the word choice is consistently appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'The majority of these nutrients is consumed by Americans during dinner and accounts for 43% and 37% respectively.' There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. However, there are minor slips, such as 'the chart shows the different trend' (should be 'a different trend') and 'The breakfast represents' (the article 'The' is unnecessary here). Overall, the grammar is accurate and supports the clarity of your report.
