Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between the nutrient types and meal categories. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends, such as the high sodium/saturated fat content in dinner and the high sugar content in snacks. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively rather than listing percentages meal by meal. The final sentence regarding health advice is unnecessary as it is not required by the prompt, which asks for a summary of the data, not a personal opinion or recommendation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'When it comes to', and 'followed by', which help the reader follow the progression of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by separating the nutrient trends more distinctly. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences in the third paragraph is somewhat repetitive in structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the data accurately. Terms like 'saturated fats', 'sodium', and 'added sugar' are used correctly. However, there is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language. Phrases like 'most numbers percentage' are awkward and imprecise. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'predominant', 'constitute', or 'a significant proportion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The pie chart display' (subject-verb agreement), 'in a typical day of USA' (missing article), and 'with 43 and 37 percentage respectively' (incorrect usage of 'percentage' instead of 'percent'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to articles, prepositions, and pluralization would improve the overall accuracy.
