Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table and pie charts compare the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum and the levels of visitor satisfaction before and after its refurbishment.
Overall, the renovation had a highly positive impact on the museum. Visitor numbers rose considerably, while the proportion of satisfied visitors increased dramatically. At the same time, the percentages of dissatisfied and very dissatisfied visitors fell sharply.
Before the refurbishment, the museum welcomed 74,000 visitors. The largest group was dissatisfied visitors, accounting for 40%, followed by those who were satisfied at 30%. Very satisfied visitors represented only 15%, while 10% were very dissatisfied. A further 5% of respondents gave no opinion.
After the refurbishment, annual attendance increased to 92,000, an increase of 18,000 visitors. Satisfaction levels improved substantially, with the satisfied category becoming the largest group at 40%. The proportion of very satisfied visitors more than doubled, rising from 15% to 35%. In contrast, the percentage of dissatisfied visitors dropped dramatically from 40% to 15%, while the very dissatisfied group was halved to 5%. The share of visitors who gave no response remained unchanged at 5%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0
The response is fundamentally flawed because it addresses the wrong prompt. The task instructions and image provided clearly relate to the nutritional content of typical meals (sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar), yet the student has written a report about visitor numbers and satisfaction at a museum. While the report is well-structured and accurately describes the data provided in the text, it fails to address the actual task requirements. Consequently, it cannot be awarded a passing score for Task Achievement, as the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Despite the off-topic content, the writing itself is highly coherent and cohesive. The student uses clear paragraphing, logical sequencing, and effective cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'At the same time,' and 'In contrast.' The progression of ideas is logical, and referencing is clear throughout the text. If the content had matched the prompt, this would be a high-scoring response for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a wide and sophisticated range of vocabulary. Phrases such as 'rose considerably,' 'increased dramatically,' 'fell sharply,' and 'proportion of satisfied visitors' are used with precision and natural control. The lexical choices are varied and appropriate for an academic report, showing a high level of proficiency in word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammatical control is excellent. The student employs a variety of complex sentence structures, including participial phrases ('accounting for 40%') and comparative clauses, with almost no errors. Punctuation is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The control over tense and numerical data presentation is highly consistent.
