Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as the high sodium and saturated fat content at dinner and the peak of sugar in snacks. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a cohesive synthesis of the data. While the main features are highlighted, the comparison between the three nutrients could be more integrated. The report is accurate in its data selection, but the presentation of figures is occasionally repetitive, and the summary could be more analytical to reach a higher band. Overall, it addresses the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used to structure the response. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the use of 'Moreover' is repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow of information could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly. The referencing is generally clear, though the structure of the final paragraph feels slightly disjointed.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'detrimental', 'proportion', and 'consumed' used correctly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, but the range is somewhat limited. Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'demonstrated the double proportion', which is not a standard collocation. The repetition of 'consumed' and 'proportion' throughout the text suggests a need for more varied synonyms to demonstrate a higher level of lexical flexibility. Spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the opening sentence missing the article 'The' before 'three pie charts' and the awkward phrasing 'accounted for 14%, followed by dinner, lunch and snacks, at 43%, 29% and 14% respectively', which creates a slight ambiguity in the list. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of full control over complex structures. Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence construction could be more varied to improve the overall sophistication of the writing.
