Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends for sodium, saturated fat, and sugar across different meal types. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the overview mentions sodium was highly consumed at dinner, but the body paragraph later notes 43% for sodium without explicitly linking it to dinner, creating a slight disconnect. While the main features are reported, the comparison between nutrients could be more integrated. The inclusion of personal commentary regarding health risks (e.g., 'which may cause diabetes') is unnecessary for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and focused solely on the data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Moving towards.' However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between the percentages and the specific nutrients is slightly muddled. Paragraphing is used, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure a smoother progression of ideas. The use of cohesive devices is present but occasionally feels forced or slightly repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'leading with 37%' and 'good amount,' which are not ideal for describing statistical data. The phrase 'highly addicted to sugar' is subjective and inappropriate for a formal report. Additionally, there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'effect their health' (should be 'affect') and 'taken overdose.' To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and proportions, such as 'accounted for,' 'constituted,' or 'a significant proportion.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include incorrect preposition usage ('in USA' instead of 'in the USA'), subject-verb agreement errors, and punctuation mistakes, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. The sentence 'which may effect their health if taken overdose' is grammatically weak and lacks necessary articles. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
