IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie charts illustrate the average proportion of three types of nutrients found in typical meals consumed throughout the day, all of which may be harmful to health if taken in excessive amounts.

Overall, sodium accounts for the highest proportion of nutrient intake at lunch and dinner, whereas sugar makes up the largest share during snack time.

At breakfast, sodium accounts for just 14%, whereas saturated fat and added sugar represent equal proportions, at 16% each. However, at lunch, the proportion of sodium intake more than doubled, reaching 29%. Saturated fat accounted for 26%, just 3 percentage points lower than sodium and 7 percentage points higher than added sugar, which stood at 19%.

Moreover, during snack time, the proportion of added sugar is 42%, which is considerably higher than that of saturated fat and sodium, at 21% and 14% respectively. Subsequently, at dinner, sodium topped the chart at 43%, followed by saturated fat and added sugar, at 37% and 23% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with accurate data from the charts. The selection of key features, such as the dominance of sodium in main meals and sugar in snacks, is well-executed. Comparisons are made throughout, such as noting that sodium intake at lunch 'more than doubled' compared to breakfast. The information is logically grouped, and the response covers all four categories (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner) comprehensively. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are mathematically precise; for instance, the dinner data mentions 43% and 37%, which total 80%, leaving 23% for sugar, which is slightly inconsistent with the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas', 'however', 'moreover', and 'subsequently', which help guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body paragraphs. The flow of information is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall summary without unnecessary repetition. The use of referencing is clear, and the structure of the report is professional and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic report. Phrases like 'average proportion', 'nutrient intake', and 'stood at' are used accurately. You successfully avoid repetitive language by varying your sentence structures and using precise terms to describe the data. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or nuanced reporting verbs could elevate the response further. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choices are appropriate for the formal tone required in IELTS Task 1.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of subordinate clauses starting with 'whereas' and 'which'. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The use of tense is consistent, appropriately using the present tense to describe the charts. The control over complex structures is consistent, contributing to the overall clarity of the report.
