Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the three nutrients and the four meal types. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesising them into a clear overview. While the main features are identified, the comparison between categories could be more sophisticated. For instance, noting that snacks are the primary source of added sugar compared to other meals is a good observation, but the report lacks a cohesive summary of the overall trends. The data is presented accurately, but the lack of analytical depth prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. Phrases like 'In breakfast of USA' and 'Whereas' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit stilted. Additionally, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While the logical progression is generally clear, the lack of varied linking words and the somewhat disjointed sentence structure limit the effectiveness of the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the charts clearly. However, the range is limited and there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'in excess amount' and 'on the same ratio'. The repetition of basic terms like 'amount' and 'quantity' suggests a need for a broader range of synonyms to describe data trends. While the meaning is always clear, the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'the three pie chart demonstrates' (subject-verb agreement error), 'that all supposed to be' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'In breakfast of USA' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
