Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all three nutrients and their distribution across meals. However, it lacks a clear overview, which is a requirement for a high band score in Task 1. The report is essentially a list of data points rather than a summary of main features and trends. While you have identified the highest values, such as sodium in dinner and sugar in snacks, the lack of an introductory summary or a concluding synthesis means the information is not fully developed or organised to highlight the most significant comparisons. To improve, you should group the data more effectively and provide a clear overview of the main trends observed across the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, one for each nutrient. However, the internal structure of these paragraphs is repetitive and mechanical. You rely heavily on the word 'whereas' to connect clauses, which makes the flow monotonous and lacks variety. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas between sentences effectively. Furthermore, the punctuation is poor, with many run-on sentences and a lack of commas to separate clauses, which makes the text difficult to read. Improving the use of transition words and varying your sentence structure would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You use the phrase 'is consumed' repeatedly throughout the text, which is monotonous. There is also an issue with word choice, such as 'intaken' (which is not standard English) and 'symbolised as Na'. The mention of 'chocolates' is an external addition not supported by the provided charts, which is a significant error in data interpretation. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of synonyms for 'consumed' (e.g., 'ingested', 'accounted for', 'made up') and ensure that your vocabulary is strictly based on the information provided in the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive sentence structures. There are frequent errors in punctuation, particularly the lack of full stops and the misuse of commas, which leads to run-on sentences. For example, 'In breakfast citizens consume 14% of sodium whereas people consume 14% of sodium in snacks whereas 29% of sodium is intaken...' is grammatically awkward and lacks proper sentence boundaries. You should focus on using a variety of sentence types, including complex sentences with appropriate subordinating conjunctions, and pay closer attention to basic punctuation rules to improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
