IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The three pie charts illustrate the average percentages of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in typical meals consumed in the USA.
Overall, it is evident that dinner accounts for the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks contain the highest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast contributes the smallest or one of the smallest proportions in all three nutrients.
Regarding sodium, dinner represents the largest share at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks account for an equal 14% each. Similarly, dinner contains the highest proportion of saturated fat, at 37%, while lunch accounts for 26%. Snacks and breakfast make up 21% and 16%, respectively.
The pattern for added sugar is considerably different. Snacks make up the largest proportion, at 42%, which is almost twice the figure for dinner, at 23%. Lunch accounts for 19%, while breakfast has the lowest percentage at 16%.
In conclusion, it is clear that dinner is the main source of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks contribute significantly more added sugar than the other meals. Overall, the figures show noticeable differences between the three nutrients.

The response is excellent and fully addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the data, such as the dominance of dinner for sodium and saturated fat and the prominence of snacks for added sugar. The comparison between the categories is clear and well-supported by the data provided. You have effectively selected the most relevant information to summarize the charts without becoming bogged down in unnecessary detail. The overview is concise and accurately reflects the key trends, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the detailed analysis of sodium and saturated fat, the analysis of added sugar, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Similarly,' and 'Regarding' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the different nutrients and meal times is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data accurately. Phrases like 'accounts for the largest proportion,' 'contributes the smallest,' and 'considerably different' demonstrate a good command of language suitable for an academic report. The terminology is precise and appropriate for the context of the task. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data trends (e.g., 'constitutes a significant portion' or 'the figures fluctuate') could elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing displays a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, effectively. Punctuation is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The use of comparative structures is particularly strong, which is essential for this type of task. The grammar is consistent throughout, and there are no slips that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is excellent, contributing to a professional and polished tone throughout the report.
