IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This chart illustrates the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in the meals taken throughout the day in USA. Excessive amount of these could be indigenous to your health. Dinner contains the highest amount of sodium and saturated fat which interpret that we should keep our diet light in the night or it will harm our body in multiple ways. Breakfast has the least amount of all and is the most healthy meal of your day. Lunch has a moderate amount of these because most of the people keep it a bit light at that time of the day. Snacks has the most amount of added sugar and comparatively high saturated food too, Snacks with any of these meals could further disrupt the intake of these and could lead to a unhealthy lifestyle specially when linked with the dinner.
People like to devour heavy meals during the night time and it clearly reflect on the amount of naturals it contains in that and breakfast presuming the safest meal due to the consumption of farm products and keeping the meal light in the morning

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response identifies the main features of the charts, such as dinner having the highest sodium and snacks having the most added sugar. However, the analysis is undermined by the inclusion of subjective, speculative commentary (e.g., 'we should keep our diet light'). In IELTS Academic Task 1, you must remain objective and avoid giving personal advice or moralizing about health. Furthermore, the data description is somewhat imprecise; for example, stating that breakfast is the 'safest meal' is an interpretation rather than a report of the data. To improve, focus strictly on comparing the percentages provided in the charts without adding external opinions or health recommendations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into two paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is limited. For instance, the second paragraph starts with 'People like to devour heavy meals,' which is an unsupported generalization that does not logically follow the previous data analysis. Referencing is also inconsistent; the term 'these' is used repeatedly without clear antecedents, making it difficult for the reader to track which nutrients are being discussed. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently,' 'in contrast,' 'furthermore') would help create a more cohesive flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but contains several inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices. The phrase 'indigenous to your health' is misused; 'indigenous' refers to native origins, not health impacts. Similarly, 'interpret that we should' is an incorrect collocation for 'suggests that.' There is also a reliance on basic vocabulary like 'highest amount' and 'least amount.' To reach a higher band, you should use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion,' 'significant,' 'minimal,' or 'fluctuate,' and ensure that words are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Snacks has the most amount') and awkward phrasing ('it clearly reflect on the amount of naturals'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation or using commas incorrectly. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as pluralization and verb tense—prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would be highly beneficial.
