Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as the high sodium content in dinner and the high added sugar in snacks. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the claim that sodium levels in snacks and breakfast are the same (14%) is incorrect based on the data provided. Additionally, the description of lunch as having all nutrients under 30% is accurate, but the overall summary lacks a clear, comparative synthesis. The response addresses the prompt but fails to provide a fully accurate or detailed overview of the data, which limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Turing to lunch' (a typo for 'Turning') and 'In the conclusion and Overall'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the comparison between meals is confusingly phrased. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is hindered by awkward transitions. While there is an overall attempt at a logical structure, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the presence of repetitive phrasing prevent a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'rised to 42%' (should be 'rose') and 'time meals'. The repetition of basic terms like 'consumed' and 'meals' limits the lexical range. While the student successfully uses terms like 'nutrients', 'saturated fat', and 'percentage', the overall control is inconsistent, and the errors in word formation and collocation occasionally distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. Examples include 'the the average', 'that are consumed', 'all three of are unhealthy', and 'most amount of added sugar are being used'. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, and there are several punctuation and spelling errors (e.g., 'Turing' instead of 'Turning'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
