Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 86 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the student identifies some main features, such as the high sodium in dinner and high added sugar in snacks, the analysis is severely underdeveloped. The response lacks a clear overview and fails to provide a comprehensive comparison of all three nutrients across all four meal categories. The significant omission of data and the failure to reach the required length result in a low score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks a logical structure. There is no clear paragraphing, and the information is presented in a fragmented manner. The use of cohesive devices is minimal and often mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'and'. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the data is not grouped effectively. The lack of a clear introduction or a concluding summary further hinders the overall flow of the text. To improve, the student should organize the data into logical paragraphs, such as grouping by nutrient or by meal type, and use a wider range of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on the words provided in the prompt (e.g., 'sodium', 'saturated fat', 'added sugar'). There is little evidence of a range of vocabulary suitable for an academic report. Phrases like 'average use' are imprecise in this context. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the inability to use more sophisticated terminology to describe trends or proportions limit the score. Expanding the vocabulary to include terms like 'constitute', 'account for', or 'proportion' would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the pie chart represent' (should be 'represents') and 'snack have' (should be 'snacks have'). Additionally, the sentence structure is simplistic, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the start of sentences. The frequent errors in basic grammar and the lack of structural variety indicate a limited control over the language, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
