Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all three nutrients and identifies the main features, such as the high consumption of snacks for added sugar and dinner for sodium and saturated fat. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The student struggles to accurately interpret the data, often using imprecise language like 'highly demanding' or 'same frequency' when the charts show clear variations. The comparison between the nutrients is also slightly confusing, as the data for sodium and saturated fat are not identical. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on grouping the data more logically and ensuring that the comparisons are mathematically accurate based on the provided charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive and awkward phrasing. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In the same way', and 'By contrast' are used, but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly, which disrupts the flow of ideas. For instance, the transition 'In the same way' does not logically connect the points about dinner and breakfast. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the three nutrients. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. The student frequently uses the word 'demanded' or 'demanding' to describe consumption, which is not the most appropriate collocation in this context. Phrases like 'in the term of' are used incorrectly throughout the text. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and nouns related to data analysis (e.g., 'percentages', 'proportions', 'consumed', 'accounted for'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the reliance on a narrow range of vocabulary prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Expanding the range of academic vocabulary is essential.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'snacks is the highly demanding meals'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'in the term of'), and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'According to the sodium the breakfast and snacks demand is same'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to distract the reader. Focusing on basic sentence structure and ensuring subject-verb agreement would lead to immediate improvement.
