IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The three pie-charts illustrate the average percentage of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks in the USA.

Overall, people in the US consume sodium and saturated mostly in dinner whereas the consumption of sugar is highest while eating snacks.

The detailed analysis of the graphs illustrate a little less than half (43%) of sodium is consumed in dinner alongside lunch which consumes a little less than one-third (29%) of sodium intake. Finally, snacks and breakfast come last both covering 14% of the total percentage.

Similarly, as for saturated fat, a little over than one-third (37%) is consumed in dinner alongside lunch which takes up almost a quarter (26%) of the total percentage. Finally, snacks and breakfast come last covering 21% and 16% of the sodium intake.

Furthermore, 42% of the total added sugar is consumed while eating snacks after which a little less than a quarter (23%) is eaten in dinner and finally, added sugar is consumed at least in breakfast and lunch containing 16% and 19%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. You have clearly highlighted the highest and lowest consumption points for each nutrient. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you state that 'snacks and breakfast come last both covering 14%' for sodium, but the chart shows breakfast at 16% and snacks at 14%. Additionally, you mention 'saturated fat... 21% and 16% of the sodium intake', which is a confusing error as you are referring to fat percentages. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that labels are correctly attributed to the corresponding nutrient categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each nutrient. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' helps guide the reader through the information. However, the paragraphing could be improved; the body paragraphs are somewhat repetitive in structure. Additionally, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is functional but could be more sophisticated. The logical progression is generally clear, but the minor data errors mentioned in the task achievement section slightly disrupt the flow of information, making the comparison less precise than it could be.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'illustrate', 'consumption', and 'intake'. There is an attempt to use varied phrasing, such as 'takes up almost a quarter'. However, there are some issues with collocation and precision, such as 'containing 16% and 19%' when referring to nutrients in meals, which is slightly unnatural. The repetition of 'a little less than' and 'a little over than' limits the lexical variety. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms for 'consumed' or 'takes up' and ensure that the vocabulary used is strictly appropriate for the context of nutritional data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'a little over than one-third' (the 'than' is unnecessary here) and 'added sugar is consumed at least in breakfast' (where 'at least' is used incorrectly to mean 'the least'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety is sufficient to support the clear presentation of the data provided in the charts.
