IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration gives information about nutrients in meals and suggests it would be dangerous for health if eaten too much. Overall, at dinner there is the largest amount of nutrients consumed by people of the US, and at breakfast their percentage numbers are equal in three nutrients.
It is quite evident from the chart percentages of nutrients that are consumed by people in the USA. Firstly, the largest amount of sodium is eaten at dinner, about 43 percent, but the percentage amounts in snacks and breakfast are equal. Secondly, the saturated fat consumption is similar to sodium as the largest percentage of the amount consumed at dinner, the second highest percentage at lunch, but the least amount of saturated fat is eaten at breakfast, around 16 percent.
Furthermore, finally, added sugar is a different consumption number as compared with the previous two, the largest percentage is eaten in snacks, approximately 42 percent, and the second number is in dinner, but the lowest percentage amount is in breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention that sodium and saturated fat are highest at dinner, you could have provided more specific comparative data between the categories to better highlight the differences. The overview is present but could be more analytical by synthesizing the data rather than just listing observations. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are clearly supported by the data provided in the charts, as some descriptions of the 'equal' percentages are slightly imprecise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for the nutrients, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the information. However, the transition 'Furthermore, finally' is awkward and redundant. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when you mention 'the second number is in dinner' without explicitly stating what that number refers to. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption', 'nutrients', and 'percentage'. However, the lexical choices are somewhat repetitive and lack precision. Phrases like 'percentage numbers are equal' or 'the second number is in dinner' are imprecise and sound unnatural. To improve, try to use more varied collocations related to data description, such as 'account for', 'constitute', or 'a significant proportion'. There are no major spelling errors, but the vocabulary remains at a fairly basic level, which limits the potential for a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'the largest amount of nutrients consumed by people of the US' is slightly awkward, and 'the percentage amounts in snacks and breakfast are equal' lacks precision. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in snacks' versus 'at snacks'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more varied sentence structures would be beneficial.
