The pie charts compares the average proportions of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in regular meals consumed in the USA.

Overall, the percentages of sodium and saturated fat were high in dinner meals, whereas the proportion of added sugar was higher in snacks.

The average percentage of saturated fat in the usual meals eaten by people in the United States was highest in dinner, at 37%. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the three charts. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the dominance of sodium and saturated fat in dinner meals and the high sugar content in snacks. Comparisons are made throughout, which is a requirement for this task. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully integrated; for instance, the final paragraph mentions the sugar content for dinner, lunch, and breakfast, but the snack figure is only mentioned in the overview. Overall, the information is accurate and well-selected.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'By contrast', and 'respectively', to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different nutrients. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear focus. To improve further, ensure that referencing remains precise; for example, in the final paragraph, you could more explicitly link the figures back to the 'snacks' category to maintain the flow of the comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, using terms like 'proportions', 'accounted for', 'constituted', and 'respectively'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There is one minor spelling error ('constitued' instead of 'constituted'). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs or synonyms for 'highest' and 'lowest' to avoid repetition. For example, instead of repeating 'proportion' or 'percentage', you could use 'levels', 'figures', or 'quantities' to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of 'while' and 'however' to create contrast. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error in the first sentence ('The pie charts compares' should be 'The pie charts compare'). Despite this, the errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. To aim for a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as passive voice constructions or participle clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
