Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts represents three types of nutrients in typical meals consumed in the USA. The three nutrients include sodium, saturated fats and sugar.

The highest amount (43%) of sodium is consumed in dinner, (29%) used in the lunch and (14%) of it is consumed via snacks and also breakfast. On the other hand, saturated fats are mostly consumed in dinner which is (37%), (26%) is of it is consumed during lunch, (21%) and (16%) of these fats are consumed in snacks and breakfast, respectively. While, sugars are also eaten in the typical meals of the United States of America, highest (42%) is consumed through snacks, (23%) and (19%) of sugar is taken through dinner and lunch respectively, and least amount of it is consumed through breakfast which is (16%).

Overall, dinner is the biggest meal share holder for all three types of nutrients, it stands at top for sodium and saturated fats and second for added sugar. On the other hand breakfast is the smallest contributor for all types of nutrients, this could be due to the fact, that people often eat light and less during morning .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all requirements of the task by identifying the main features of the three nutrients across the four meal categories. You have successfully selected and reported key data points, such as the highest consumption of sodium at dinner and sugar in snacks. However, the analysis is slightly hindered by a factual error in the summary paragraph: you stated that dinner is the 'biggest meal share holder for all three types of nutrients,' but the data shows that sugar is consumed most in snacks (42%), not dinner. To reach a higher band, ensure that your summary accurately reflects the data presented in the charts without over-generalizing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'respectively,' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions are slightly awkward, such as 'While, sugars are also eaten...' which is grammatically disjointed. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph could be improved by using more varied linking words to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'nutrients,' 'consumed,' and 'contributor.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'biggest meal share holder,' which is not standard academic phrasing. You also rely on repetitive structures when describing the percentages. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and proportions, such as 'account for,' 'constitute,' or 'the majority of.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The pie charts represents' (subject-verb agreement) and '26% is of it is consumed' (redundant phrasing). Additionally, the sentence 'While, sugars are also eaten in the typical meals of the United States of America, highest (42%) is consumed through snacks' is missing a subject and contains an unnecessary comma. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant words will significantly improve your accuracy.
