Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons. You covered all four meal categories and the three nutrient types. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview of the data trends. While you mention that dinner has high percentages, you could have improved the task achievement by highlighting the most significant contrast, such as the dominance of added sugar in snacks versus the dominance of sodium in dinner. The inclusion of personal commentary about health in the introduction is unnecessary for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and focused solely on the data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific meal type. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In terms of,' 'Regarding,' and 'With regards to,' to transition between sections. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. The structure relies heavily on listing percentages rather than synthesizing the information. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and use more sophisticated referencing to avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'nutrients,' and 'excessive.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'percentage' and 'higher/lower than others.' To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied synonyms and precise reporting verbs or adjectives, such as 'account for,' 'constitute,' 'predominate,' or 'marginal.' There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the information clearly, though it lacks the sophistication required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the average proportion in standard meals of three types of nutrients' (which is slightly awkward) and the repetitive use of 'which is' clauses. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the sentence variety is limited. To improve, try to combine sentences more fluidly using relative clauses or participial phrases rather than relying on 'which is' to connect ideas. Most errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range of structures displayed.
