IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts illustrate the proportion of three potentially harmful nutrients contained in regular daily meals.

Overall, USA meals are composed of many compounds such as sodium which is highly used in breakfast, snacks are mostly composed of added sugars, and saturated fats are also predominantly found in dinner as like as sodium.

In detail, in breakfast saturated fats and added sugar has the same proportion of 16%, whereas lunch and dinner are highly consisting of saturated fats around 26% and 37% as comparative to added sugar which stood at only 19% and 23%. In contrast, snacks are highly predominated by added sugar about 42%, respectively saturated fats have the lowest proportion around 21% as compared to saturated fat.

In the case of sodium, its usage has the highest proportion in the dinner around 43 percent, interestingly sodium has the similar percentage in breakfast and snacks stood at 14% and lunch is consisting of sodium only 29%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the three nutrients across the four meal types. You have successfully highlighted the key trends, such as the high proportion of added sugar in snacks and the dominance of sodium in dinner. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, stating that sodium is 'highly used in breakfast' is misleading when the chart shows it is actually at its lowest point (14%). Additionally, the comparison between nutrients is sometimes confusing, such as the phrase 'respectively saturated fats have the lowest proportion around 21% as compared to saturated fat', which is repetitive and unclear. To improve, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and that comparisons are logically structured.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details. You use some cohesive devices like 'In detail', 'In contrast', and 'In the case of', which help guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. For example, the transition 'as like as sodium' is non-standard and hinders the smooth progression of ideas. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when comparing multiple data points in a single sentence. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that your referencing (e.g., 'the former', 'the latter') is precise to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'predominated', and 'nutrients'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocation and word choice errors, such as 'highly consisting of' instead of 'consists largely of' or 'is composed mainly of'. The phrase 'as like as' is also incorrect in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to data description, such as 'account for', 'constitute', and 'a significant proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'saturated fats and added sugar has' (should be 'have') and 'lunch is consisting of' (should be 'consists of'). There are also issues with preposition usage and sentence construction, such as 'as comparative to' instead of 'compared to'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring that your verb forms are used correctly in descriptive contexts.
