IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The three pie charts illustrate the average proportions of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar contained in four types of meals consumed in the USA: breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner.

Overall, dinner accounts for the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat consumption, whereas snacks contain the highest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast consistently contributes the smallest or one of the smallest proportions of these three nutrients.

Regarding sodium, dinner makes up the largest share, at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each account for 14% of sodium consumption. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat, with dinner again representing the highest proportion, at 37%, while lunch contributes 26%. Snacks account for 21%, and breakfast has the lowest figure, at 16%.

The distribution of added sugar differs considerably from the other two nutrients. Snacks are responsible for the largest proportion, at 42%, which is almost twice the figure for dinner, at 23%. Lunch accounts for 19%, while breakfast has the smallest share, at 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response is excellent. You have successfully identified and reported the main features of the charts, providing a clear overview and supporting the data with relevant comparisons. You covered all three nutrients (sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar) and all four meal types. The data is accurately represented, and the comparisons between the nutrients—such as noting that snacks are the primary source of added sugar while dinner dominates in sodium and saturated fat—are well-integrated. The response is fully developed and meets all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use an effective introductory paragraph, a concise overview, and separate body paragraphs for the different nutrients. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Regarding', 'A similar pattern', and 'while' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the distinct categories of information, ensuring the response is easy to follow and coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Phrases such as 'account for', 'consistently contributes', 'represents the highest proportion', and 'differs considerably' show a level of precision and flexibility. The vocabulary is used accurately to describe trends and proportions. While the range is sufficient and precise, it could be pushed further toward a more sophisticated level (e.g., using more varied synonyms for 'proportion' or 'figure') to reach the highest band, but it is already very strong.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The grammar is highly accurate, with a wide range of sentence structures used correctly. You effectively combine simple and complex sentences, such as using subordinate clauses ('which is almost twice the figure for dinner') and comparative structures. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is fluent and professional, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
